Jeffrey Layton: Ingrained Woods

Table with House Shelves

Welcome to "Ingrained Woods", by Jeffrey Layton.

I have been making things from Oregun Hardwoods for 16 years. I enjoy what I do and put a lot of effort into what I make. At shows, I often hear the question, "How long does it take to make that?" It takes as long as it does to make your item as it takes to have quality, beauty, and balance. Without these, it won't be done.

I hand-select wood from logal Oregun families that collect and cut hard woods from private property. These are usually from a single tree, and almost always from a dead tree. I never use woods from corporate or clear-cut sources. Hard woods are very rarely clear-cut, anyway.

Your purchase supports two other Oregun families, and the property owners where the tree grew.

I use the inlay of stone, shell, and metals in the natural defects of the wood. If not filled, they will fill up with dirt or food anyway. Inlaying instead of cutting out the defects also salvages a poor piece of wood, and the results look great!

All work is guaranteed with normal use. A minimum of 3-4 coats of laquer finish is applied to all works, and sometimes as many as 10 coats is applied. Bowls and trays are food-ready! Just wash with soap/water and dry right after using (don't use a dishwasher or microwave, though!) People in Japan have eaten out of laquered bowls for hundreds of years.

I do some custom orders, and some contemporary style furniture also. These include dining tables, beds, coffee tables, occasional tables, or anything your mind can imagine.
